  23. <p>     THE BOTTOM LINE: Meryl Streep shines in a glitzy black
  24. comedy, but it's still She-Devil with a make-over.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>     Men pump up at the spa, bake their chests on the beach,
  27. use Rogaine as a hair spray. Yuppie vanity knows no gender. Yet
  28. Death Becomes Her says the yearning for youth is solely a
  29. female problem. This is a movie that hates women every bit as
  30. much as Enchanted April adores them.

  32. <p>     Madeline (Meryl Streep), an actress, and Helen (Goldie
  33. Hawn), a writer, are obsessed with their bodies. They will go
  34. to a quack doctor or a fat farm to get flat and firm. To find
  35. a potion that will keep them forever young--a kind of
  36. Preparation Age--Mad and Hell will even make a mud-pact with
  37. Satan. And you can bet the devil is a woman (Isabella
  38. Rossellini). Only the sodden man in their lives (Bruce Willis),
  39. a plastic surgeon turned makeup artist for the newly dead, has
  40. any understanding of the toxic wastes that lace the Fountain of
  41. Youth.

  43. <p>     For about an hour--while Streep is doing her nonpareil
  44. wicked-witch routine--you can have a good, mean time at this
  45. movie, in synch with the cartoonish comedy (Meryl tumbling down
  46. a staircase that has about 359 steps) and elaborate special
  47. effects (Is that a hole in Goldie's stomach or has she really
  48. slimmed down?). All this is swell. Farce, after all, should
  49. never be politically correct.
  50. </p>
  51. <p>     But the best farces are animated by disinterest, not
  52. contempt. This one is undone by the twin Hollywood trends of
  53. misogyny and morphing. The picture's political and technical
  54. slickness betrays its intentions and gives it the smooth,
  55. opulently dressed, unwontedly cheery look of a Beverly Hills
  56. corpse.
